Voice Typing in Notion
How to Dictate Notes (2026)

Notion doesn't have built-in voice typing. Notion AI can generate text, but that's not dictation — it rewrites your ideas in its own words. If you want to speak and have your words appear in Notion, you need one of these three approaches.

Option 1: macOS Dictation

macOS system dictation works in Notion's editor, both in the desktop app and in any browser.

Setup

  1. Enable Dictation in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation.
  2. Open a Notion page and click where you want text.
  3. Press fn twice and speak.
  4. Press fn again to stop.

Where it falls short

  • 30–60 second timeout — can't dictate long notes in one go.
  • Manual punctuation — saying “comma” in meeting notes breaks your flow.
  • Notion's rich editor quirks — Notion uses a custom block editor. macOS Dictation occasionally inserts text in the wrong block or drops formatting.

Option 2: Notion AI

Notion AI is an add-on that generates text from prompts. Type /ai or press Space in an empty block.

What it does

Generates, summarizes, rewrites, and translates text. Useful for brainstorming or cleaning up existing notes.

Where it falls short for dictation

  • Not dictation — Notion AI doesn't transcribe your voice. It generates text from typed prompts. The output is the AI's words, not yours.
  • $10/month per member — adds up for teams.
  • Cloud-only — sends prompts and context to OpenAI's servers.
  • Notion-only — doesn't help you in any other app.

Option 3: Resonant — dictation that keeps your words

Resonant transcribes what you actually say. Press fn, speak, release. Your words appear in Notion — punctuated, cleaned of filler words, and exactly what you said.

What it's good at

  • Your words — not AI-generated text. What you say is what appears.
  • No time limit — dictate meeting notes, journal entries, or documentation in one go.
  • Automatic punctuation — clean text without saying commands.
  • Filler removal — “um” and false starts cleaned.
  • Works in any Notion field — pages, database properties, comments, inline text.
  • Fully offline — your notes stay on your machine.
  • System-wide — same hotkey works in every app, not just Notion.

Setup

  1. Download Resonant and grant permissions.
  2. Open any Notion page.
  3. Press fn and speak.
  4. Release. Text appears at your cursor.

Frequently asked questions

Does Notion have built-in voice typing?

No. Notion AI generates text from prompts but doesn't transcribe speech. Use macOS Dictation or Resonant for voice-to-text.

Can I dictate into Notion on Mac?

Yes. Click into a Notion page and press fn twice (macOS) or hold fn (Resonant).

What's the difference between Notion AI and voice dictation?

Notion AI generates text the AI writes. Dictation transcribes what you say. If you want your own words, use dictation.

Does voice typing work in Notion databases?

Yes. Both macOS Dictation and Resonant work in any Notion text field, including database properties and comments.

Can I dictate into Notion offline?

Notion needs internet to sync, but Resonant's dictation works offline. Text appears locally and syncs when you reconnect.
